Their story
John, fifth son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, was born at Beaumont Palace in 1166. A member of the House of Plantagenet, he ascended the English throne in 1199. His reign was marked by significant political and military challenges, including conflicts with the King of France, Philip II, and widespread dissent among his barons. These struggles ultimately led to the sealing of Magna Carta in 1215, a landmark document in the development of English law and constitutional government. John also held the title of Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. He died at Newark Castle in 1216, leaving a complex and enduring legacy.
